Design for Justice 2023 blog series published
In September 2023, TU Delft introduced a new Design for Justice PhD course in partnership with the Nederlandse Onderzoeksschool Wijsbegeerte (OSZW), led by Ibo van de Poel and Steffen Steinert.
This course delved into the fascinating intersection of design and justice, focusing on innovative methodologies like Value Sensitive Design and ethics-by-design. These methods are all about integrating values, such as justice, right from the start of technology design and development.
Throughout the course, students had the opportunity to explore the relationship between justice and technology design with the guidance of guest lecturers. They tackled important questions such as who holds the reins in design, who stands to benefit, and what values are inherent in our technologies. Topics ranged from urban design to artificial intelligence, all with a keen eye on justice implications.
In the blog posts listed below, students dive into critical issues surrounding designing for justice. Expect insightful evaluations on improving approaches like value-sensitive design to ensure all voices are heard. Discussions also touch upon the ethical considerations of using location data for humanitarian aid and balancing privacy concerns. Furthermore, another blog explores the ethical dimensions of female-shaped sex robots, advocating for inclusive design approaches that respect dignity and promote consent in human-robot interactions.
- Designing for Justice: Breaking free from pre-set value constraints
- Balancing Values and Desires: Justifying the Design Process of Sex Robots
- Who cares!? A defense for caring designers and technology
