Annual Themes

Design for Human Autonomy (2024-2025)

The drive for autonomous technology spans from workplaces to personal lives, promising breakthroughs in safety, healthcare, and daily conveniences. But this raises a crucial question: What happens to human autonomy? Historically seen as a tool to enhance our freedom, today’s technology risks undermining human control and agency. Our annual theme, “Design for Human Autonomy,” seeks to address this by realigning tech development to prioritize human control and empowerment.

Design for Justice (2023-2024)

The Design for Values Institute has selected the value Justice for the Annual Theme of 2023-2024. This value highlights the importance of rethinking design and engineering processes, often inspired by experiences from marginalized people. In the 21st century people encounter rapid change and fast paced technological development. To make sure that these developments will be beneficial for the planet and the human condition, it is important to design these technologies for values, such as justice.

Every academic year the Delft Design for Values Institute pays extra attention to one particular value. We bring people together around that theme and organize and facilitate various activities.
