‘Design Philosophy after the Technology Turn’

Design and technology are intertwined in history ever since humans started to reshape the natural environment with intent. Contemporary technologies, especially emerging ones like artificial intelligence, gene editing and climate engineering, continue to significantly influence human existence in the world; how we are born and die, what we think and do, who we love and oppress, why we dream and dread. In recent years, there has been unprecedented attention to designed things and designing processes on the part of professional philosophers and other scholars who philosophise about technology. It is time to take stock of these developments and build on them to further consolidate the field of design philosophy.

We seek to promote the field of design philosophy by bringing together a wide-ranging collection of original articles, from both design and non-design research communities. We welcome contributions that explore different socially disruptive technologies, especially emerging ones, that are transforming human-world relations. We call for manuscripts that academically engage the relevant literatures, from design disciplines too, as a way to improve our current understanding about design. Authors may adopt different formats, such as reviews, critical essays, and case studies, from purely theoretical to empirically based, and address any topic of special interest, including but not limited to, politics, democracy, participation, posthumanism, creativity, sustainability, ethics, decolonisation, and automation.

Call for proposals: March 1 2023
Submission of proposals: June 30 2023
Notification to authors: July 31 2023
Submission of full papers: December 1 2023
Reviews to authors: February 1 2024
Submission of revised papers: May 31 2024
Publication date: second half of 2024

Submission of proposals
Proposals should be about 1000-1500 words (references excluded from the count) and provide a clear outline of the paper’s positioning and contribution with respect to design philosophy. All proposals will be evaluated by both editors, before selected authors will be contacted and invited to submit their full papers. In the meantime, the editors will negotiate the publication of the book with a renowned academic publisher.
