The Delft Design for Values Institute is sponsored by the Gilles Hondius foundation. The Gilles Hondius Foundation has a non- profit motive and contributes to scientific research that involves socially responsible and sustainable development of technology. In particular research in the field of value sensitive design.

An authority in the field of value sensitive design is Prof. Dr. Batya Friedman (USA). Batya Friedman was the first to introduce the term ‘value sensitive design’ and is the founder of the Value Sensitive Design Lab at the University of Washington in Seattle. During the Ceremonial TU Delft’s 178th Dies Natalis, on Friday 10 January 2020, Prof. Dr. Friedman was honored with a TU Delft honorary doctorate.

Important reasons for awarding this honorary doctorate are; her track record as initiator and leader of research for value sensitive design. Because of her unwavering drive and commitment, Batya creates broad support. Thus, she inspires many young researchers and designers for value sensitive design. The Delft Design for Values Institute regards Friedman as a pioneer in her field of research. The goal that she pursues with her research is very similar to the research that the Gilles Hondius foundation sponsors. Therefore  Prof. Dr. Batya Friedman deserves the honorary title “First Gilles Hondius Fellow” in addition to her honorary doctorate.
